You might want to just plan other stops (or stop wherever it looks good to hunt, like most of us hounds do), in that area and check out the book’s location, too.

I was out after some opal, chasing a spot from Garrett romaine’s falcon guidebook; came upon some big veins of purple high on the bluffs around Opalene Gulch, kinda out by marsing, or #55 if you have the book… Something tells me you might lol. Anyways if you know what I’m talking about, hmu.

The blue opal diggs there have now been shut down to the public. People need to be aware that if they trash places up when they visit, the land gets shut down now. Hate to see it happening out there. It’s an area I always want to return to after being gone for awhile.

(sorry couldn’t resist) Ahh, those agates are too of course. Someday I’ll get up that way to try to find a few from down here in Fairfield, Ca. Thanks for posting on your trips, HeySal. 😉

Too many people go out and destroy areas. You can join the forums free and meet people there. They will be quite nice about letting you tag along and learn what you’re looking for. As far as generally – the Owyhees are riddled with pockets of different minerals. They are all over the place. Just drive in and check the sides of the roads here and there and hunt where you see interesting rocks on the roadsides. There are also gem hunting guides for Idaho and SE Oregon that will give directions to some more well known sites. There are rock and gem clubs in the area you can join, too. To get to those little spots that nobody really knows about yet takes some walking and some hunting, so be prepared to do some exploring if you want to find places that are relatively fresh and unpicked over. That’s a big area with few passable roads, so there’s still lots to discover out there.
